I had the absolute pleasure today to listen to Tchaikovsky’s amazing String Sextet in D minor. This concert was the first of many Friday lunch concerts this semester at 1:10pm Irish time (14:10 German time). It’s free to attend. I for one will be sure not to miss a single one :D They’re live streamed on the MusicAtUCC YouTube channel, so join in!  For now, have a look at today’s concert if you like, the head in the lower right corner is mine lol.

You might have noticed it’s a bit quiet in here. I spent a couple of restful days at my wonderful friend Karen’s flat in London, exploring the city from a bike commuters perspective, flowing through the chaotically organized traffic of the largest city I’ve ever cycled in. Leaving the place, cycling through never-ending suburbs, I was suddenly overcome by a profound sense of sadness: why am I doing this, leaving friends and the safeness of home behind? I have nothing but admiration for globetrotters, travelling the world for years and years in search of meaning and experience. The sadness shouldn’t last long though, and two days later there was nothing but joy left in climbing the steep ascends and flying down the breezing descends of England. The landscape also changed in accord with my mood. Yesterday was perhaps the most interesting day of the trip so far: almost no cars, very bumpy gravel trails next to a canal of homely boats, series of locks from the 1800s for the boats to climb mountains (see pictures from yesterday), and then following an old train line - now a cycle path - into Bristol, through two dark and eery train tunnels, one of them almost two miles long.

Now, looking at the calendar and realising I have a mere 8 days to get to Cork while having to climb many of Wales’ vicious mountains, the motto of the journey will probably change to “miles, not smiles”, as Alastair Humphreys put it in his book Around the World by Bike. I’m listening to the book at the moment, maybe that reflects a bit in my writing style 😄

Anyways, of I go, it’s 1pm already 😆

Camping in Britain costs twice as much as in the places I was before.

Camping in Großbritannien kostet zwei mal so viel wie in den Ländern in denen ich vorher war.

Took a day of today to visit Sam’s museum “This museum is (not) obsolete”. Magical little space, and that MIDI converted pipe organ sounds fantastic. The guy has a YouTube channel called “Look Mum No Computer”, go check it out if you’re into bleepy, blinky stuff like this :D

Heute gab’s mal einen Ruhetag. Ich war in Sam’s Museum “This museum is (not) obsolete”. Magischer kleiner Ort, und die Orgel klingt fantastisch. Er hat auch nen Youtube Kanal, “Look Mum No Computer”. Könnt ihr ja mal vorbei gucken :D (es wird schwieriger auf deutsch zu schreiben haha)

Ich kann’s selbst kaum begreifen, ich habe es bis nach Calais geschafft. Mir sind tatsächlich etwas die Tränen gekommen als ich den Namen der Stadt sah, aus der ich ins vereinigte Königreich übersetzen werde (lustigerweise habe ich “Calais” als erstes auf meinem Handybildschirm gesehen statt auf einem romantischen Straßenschild). Das hier könnte die Hälfte der Strecke markieren, keine Ahnung, ich werde die Distanzen hinterher aus den aufgenommenen GPS Tracks rekonstruieren. Wie dem auch sei, es fühlt sich nach einem Punkt an, der bedeutend genug ist, um mit einer Flasche Wein und einfachem aber super leckerem Essen gefeiert zu werden. Ticket für die Fähre ist gebucht, morgen, 11:50. Mal schauen wie das klappt. Im Hintergrund dröhnt die Karaokedisco von Campingplatz 🥴

I can’t quite believe it myself, I made it to Calais. I actually welled up a bit when seeing the name of the city from which I’ll set over to the UK (ironically “Calais” showed on my smartphone screen first, instead of on some romantic street sign). This may be the half way point, I have no idea, I’ll reconstruct the distances from the GPS tracks I recorded when I’m finished. Anyways, this feels like a significant enough point in the journey to celebrate the one night in France with a bottle of wine and some simple yet delicious food. Ticket for the ferry is booked, tomorrow, 11:50. Let’s see how that works out. In the background drones the campsite’s karaoke disco 🥴

Auf dem Foto sieht man es nicht ganz: Das Hinterrad ist schrott. Speichenbruch, zuerst zwei, dann drei, am Ende insgesamt sieben gebrochene Speichen und als Resultat eine unrettbar verbogene Felge. Siehe Video :D Reparaturversuche sind fehlgeschlagen und ich habe mich dazu entschieden ein neues, etwas besseres Hinterrad zu kaufen. Wegen der omnipräsenten Lieferschwierigkeiten musste ich eine Weile darauf warten und habe 4 Nächte auf dem selben (doch recht schönen) Campingplatz übernachtet. Ich hab wie irgendwie immer ne ganze Menge toller Leute kennengelernt und war deshalb eigentlich kaum wehmütig ob meiner unterbrochenen Reise. Anyways, Hinterrad hab ich jetzt gewechselt und es läuft (nach mehreren Stunden frustrierender Zentrierversuche) endlich wieder gerade. Seit 3 Tagen bin ich wieder am Fahren und es ist einfach nur geil.

You can’t quite see it in the picture: the back wheel is finished. Broken spokes, starting with two, then a third one, for a total of seven spokes broken and a rim bent beyond repair. See the video :D Attempts to repair the wheel failed and I decided to buy a new, slightly better one. Because of the omnipresent supply issues I had to wait for a while for the wheel to arrive and ended up camping at the same (actually quite nice) spot for 4 nights. As kind of always, I met a bunch of cool people, making it an awesome stay at the campsite, despite my tour being somewhat disrupted. Anyways, I have changed the back wheel now and (after multiple hours of frustrating attempts at truing it) it finally runs smooth again. I’ve been back on the road now for 3 days and it’s just awesome.

Nachdem ich gestern von meinen super zuvorkommenden 1NiteTent Hosts spontan zum Grillen eingeladen wurde, bin ich heute mal zur Abwechslung leicht verkatert nur 33km gefahren 😄😂

After my super generous 1NiteTent hosts invited me to join them for BBQ yesterday, I only cycled a hungover 33km today 😄😂

Die Reise geht weiter, endlich! Ich bin auf dem Weg nach Osnabrück letztendlich doch nicht ganz dem R1 gefolgt, sondern habe eine Abkürzung nach Osnabrück genommen und so 100km gespart. Tatsächlich war der Weg entlang der Weser aber auch super schön und szenisch. Jetzt geht’s auf Richtung Niederlande! 🇳🇱 Morgen geht’s endlich aus Deutschland raus und die internationale Reise so richtig los :)

The journey continues, finally! After all, on my way to Osnabrück I didn’t follow the R1 directly, took a shortcut and saved 100km that way. The way along the Weser river turned out to be almost more beautiful and scenic than the original route. Now I’m heading towards the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 Tomorrow, leaving Germany, marks the real start of this international journey :)

Ich wusste gar nicht, dass in Niedersachsen solche Berge existieren… Wenn man dann einmal oben ist (schieben erlaubt), dann ist die Aussicht aber unschlagbar.

I didn’t know they had mountains like this in Lower Saxony… But once you made it up there (pushing your bike is allowed) the view is fantastic.

Nach einer erfolgreichen und durchaus erholsamen ersten Übernachtung in Bernburg an der Saale hat mich heute das erste Mal das Symbol des R1 Europaradwegs begrüßt, welches mich nun den Hauptteil der strecke bis nach London begleitet :) Heute schlafe ich in nem Garten, den ich über 1NiteTent.com gefunden habe. Kann man echt gut machen, die Leute sind super nett!

After a successful and honestly quite relaxing first night in Bernburg an der Saale, the symbol of the Euroroute R1 greeted me for the first time today. It’ll accompany me for the main part of the journey until London :) Today I set up camp in a home garden I found on 1NiteTent.com. It’s a great way to find a place to sleep, and the people here are super nice!

Es ist soweit. Die Taschen sind am Fahrrad, das Wetter hat sich wieder etwas abgekühlt. Die Tour kann losgehen! Erstes Ziel: Osnabrück, die Heimatstadt 🏠 Dann: Durch die Niederlande an die Küste, Belgien, Frankreich, von Calais per Fähre nach Dover ins vereinigte Königreich, hoch nach Manchester, und dann mit einer zweiten Fähre nach Irland :) Danke an alle, die mir in den letzten Wochen und Monaten bei den Vorbereitungen mit Tipps, Materialien und guten Zusprüchen geholfen haben, ohne euch wäre ich diese Reise wahrscheinlich gar nicht angetreten. It’s time. The bags are on the bike, the weather’s cooled down a bit. Now there’s nothing left but to start! First goal: Osnabrück, hometown 🏠 After that: Passing through the Netherlands to the coast, Belgium, France, crossing from Calais to Dover into the UK with a ferry, heading up to Manchester, and lastly with a second ferry to Ireland :) Thanks to everyone that helped me with their tips, materials and encouraging words, without you I probably wouldn’t even have started this tour.
